Heartworm prevention medication is recommended for all dogs and cats in Ontario from June to November. This is the time of year when heartworm can be transmitted by mosquito bites.
We are happy to provide you with the product you want for your pet. There are many products available for heartworm control in pets and while they all are very effective against heartworm, many will also control other parasites like intestinal parasites and external parasites.
When deciding on which heartworm prevention medication to use for your pet, there are many factors to consider:
- Do you prefer a medication that is given orally, or applied topically?
- Does your pet have intestinal parasites, or has your pet previously been diagnosed with intestinal parasites (e.g. roundworm, hookworm, whipworm, tapeworm)?
- What is your pet’s lifestyle?
- Do you wish to also protect your pet from external parasites (fleas, mites, ticks)? Note that for best control against ticks, a second medication is recommended to be used as a tick prevention product.
Please call or book an appointment to discuss which medication is best for your pet’s parasite control strategy!
